Who Are We?

Our interdisciplinary team, consisting of over 70 students from a variety of fields such as Electrical, Communication, Mechanical, Controls, and Instrumentation, is working on a range of projects including the design of various types of space systems and the development of payloads.

What Have We Done So Far?

On September 26, 2016, we successfully launched one of the first student-designed satellites, Pratham, which put our institute, IIT Bombay, in the elite space club. We received the beacon for Pratham at our ground station at IIT Bombay on September 28, 2016.

What Are We Doing Now?

Our team has presented papers at prestigious conferences on various topics based on our systems, and we are currently working on four major systems: STADS (a star tracker-based attitude determination system to accurately determine the orientation of satellites in space), Sanket (an antenna deployment and communication system), CanSat (a small satellite to be launched to an altitude of 1km), and the Ham Radio Club and Ground Station Segment (which works on wireless technology and building a network of ground stations). Since our first launch, our team has grown significantly in terms of both technical expertise and size, and we have attracted many enthusiastic students from the institute who are eager to contribute to our pursuit of excellence in space technology.

What Is Our Vision?

We have made significant progress on all of these systems, and our plan is to eventually incorporate them into a satellite to be launched in the coming years. Our near-term goals include testing our image processing pipeline for STADS and demonstrating the technology readiness level for Sanket to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The HRC GSS segment is actively working on reviving the IITBSSP ground station and establishing an autonomous ground station to support our future missions. We are also working to obtain an HAM radio license for IIT Bombay.

Who And What Are We Looking For?

To continue driving the success of our team and make IITBSSP a leading center for space technology, we are seeking motivated enthusiasts who will take on leadership roles and guide our team for years to come. We value versatility in our team members and look for individuals who are comfortable working on both the hardware and software aspects of our systems as needed. We also follow detailed systems engineering practices to ensure effective management and seamless integration between our various systems and subsystems.
